Two alien terrestrial species that scientists are currently concerned about on Cape Breton Island are Scotch broom (Cystisus scoparius) and Japanese knotweed (known as Fallopia japonica, Polygonum cuspidatum, Polygonum japonica and Renoutria japonica - it can't decide what it wants to be named scientifically!).

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is another species that scientists are keeping their eyes on here in Cape Breton because of its invasive status in other regions of Canada.
